A new study from Boston University shows that women who use hair relaxers more than twice a year or for more than five years may have a 50 percent increased risk of cervical cancer.
"These hair straightening drugs have already been linked to breast cancer, ovarian cancer and now uterine cancer," says Dr. Onyinye Dbalogun, a radiation oncologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital who added that "although more evidence is needed, we need to stop and pay close attention."
According to Dr. Balogun says these products are full of chemicals, and some can be combined with formaldehyde, which has been considered a cancer chemical and is the same chemical he uses to preserve dead bodies.
"We think that when they are applied to the hair, they can be absorbed directly through the scalp and then enter the body. by entering the body, they can change estrogen-dependent pathways, a process involved in controlling the amount of estrogen in the body that can cause endometrial swelling," he explained.
but we have evidence that a number of these chemicals are associated with breast and ovarian cancer because they destroy the levels of estrogen in the body, and that may be the way that it can cause high levels of endometrial (uterine) cancer.
