in his resignation letter, which was distributed to the media, the general confirmed that he was responsible for the failure to prevent an unprecedented attack against Israel.

Haliva's letter said: "On Saturday, October 7, Hamas launched a terrible surprise attack against the state of Israel... The intelligence department under my leadership did not fulfill the tasks assigned to us.

Haliva added: "I have carried that dark day ever since. every day and night, I will carry with me forever the pain of war."

General Aharon Haliva called for a "thorough investigation into the factors and circumstances" that allowed the attack to happen.

Who is Aharon Haliva?

Haliva was born in 1967 in Haifa to parents of Moroccan descent and joined the Israeli army in 1985.

He received a bachelor's degree in social sciences from Bar-Ilan University and a master's degree in the same field from Haifa University.

he first volunteered as a paratrooper in the Israeli Army Brigade, then became a combat soldier officer. He fought as a platoon leader in the 202nd Parachute Battalion in Operation Law and Order in southern Lebanon in 1988.

before becoming the Head of Military Intelligence, Haliva served as the Head of the Directorate of Operations, the Head of the Directorate of Technology and Transport, the Head of the Operations Section of the Directorate of Operations, the Commander of the 98th Parachute Division, the Commander of the Parachute Brigade and Commander of the IDF School.

in November 2017, he banned Torah studies that were held outside the Ariel Sharon camp, a move that sparked protests from hundreds of soldiers who sought support from the Chief of Staff, Gadi Eisenkot.

In October 2021, he was appointed head of the Department of Military Intelligence.

in his new position, he considered that the Abraham Agreement "is based on the need of the inhabitants of the countries of the Middle East to improve their standard of living and to deal with the climate crisis."

On October 7, he was on vacation in Eilat. reports said he was informed at about 3 a.m. that day of "certain signals from Gaza" about an imminent attack, but reports said he did not participate in high-level IDF consultations about those signals and could not be reached by phone.

later Haliva was quoted as telling those close to him that even if he had participated in the consultation, he would have concluded that Hamas seems to be training and that dealing with the issue could wait until the morning. "It wouldn't have changed the end result in any way," he said.

on October 17, he wrote a letter to his soldiers in which he said: "We have failed in our most important task, and as the head of Israel's Intelligence Directorate, I am fully responsible for the failure."

also in the same month, he said: "In all my visits to the units of the Directorate of Military Intelligence in the last 11 days, I sat down and emphasized that the beginning of the war was a failure of intelligence," adding that the Department of Military Intelligence, Directorate, under of his leadership"failed to warn of a terrorist attack."he is currently participating in an internal military investigation into his failures in the period leading up to the October 7 attack.

The investigation is scheduled to be presented to the Chief of the Israel Defense Forces, General Herzi Halevy, at the beginning of June.

According to a report by Israel's Channel 12 in December, Israel's Military Intelligence Directorate held a discussion three months before the attack, in which an officer - identified only by his rank and initials, Brigadier General Bey - concluded :"We tried but we couldn't."we cannot say how (Hamas leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar) will act, and therefore the commanders in the field must take the necessary precautions."

he said the results of the discussion were given to Haliva who ordered the extension of the intelligence investigation and added that this has already been done.
