Do you know how hurricanes are named?
but what is remembered most is the one named Katrina which greatly affected the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama in the United States.
How are these hurricanes named?
Named hurricanes
Hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico are named by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) which is headquartered in Switzerland.
In the past, only female names were used but from 1979, male names started to be used.

There are six groups of names that are used in rotation.
This means that the names used for hurricanes this year will not be used again until 2022.
Names on this list are subject to change by WMO.
This list was first used in 1979. before that, the name of hurricane Fern was changed in 1966 and was replaced by Frieda. No reason was given.

Obsolete names
some names fall out of use, especially when there is so much damage or loss that reusing the name will bring back painful memories.
An example is hurricane Katrina that killed 2,000 people in 2005 and caused great damage in the United States.
the typhoon left one million people homeless. The city of New Orleans, Louisiana was severely affected.

In the WMO there is a group of experts called the Committee on Tropical Cyclones which meets every year.
The group decides which names will be used again and which ones will be discontinued.
obsolete names
Besides Katrina, there are other names that have fallen out of use. Mitch, due to the 1998 hurricane that killed 11,000 people in Honduras and Nicaragua, is no longer used. the hurricane is the worst to hit the western regions of the world in the past two decades.
Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and Hurricane Irene in 2011 also caused extensive damage. Those names are no longer used.
The deadliest hurricane ever to hit the United States occurred in 1780, where it killed 22,000 people in Martinique, Barbados and St. Eustatius.
At that time names had not begun to be used to refer to hurricanes.
Names discontinued since 1954.

Names of other places in the world
in other parts of the world, there is a different system for naming hurricanes.
But all names go through the WMO.
For example, in the Northwest Pacific and South China Sea regions, there is a table of names that each affected nation contributes to.
after a tornado occurs, the next tornado is given the next name.
For example, the first typhoon is called Damrey (first typhoon Cambondia) and the next one should be called Kaikui (first name China).
The current typhoon in those areas is Chaba (the name of the fourth place in Thailand).
what happened recently was called Megi and it affected the areas of China and Taiwan. The name ranks fourth among South Korean names.
World Meteorological Organization
The names of hurricanes and storms began to be used in England and Ireland, on an experimental basis.
There is a name for every alphabet, except Q, U, X, Y and Z, which is the system used to name hurricanes in the North Atlantic
